A Global Scientific Achievement for Dr. Alaa Alsubaiyi
The Syrian American Academic Society (SAAS) is proud to celebrate the outstanding scientific achievement of Dr. Alaa Alsubaiyi, a founding member, Board Member, and former President of the Society, on the occasion of receiving the 2026 ACS Green Chemistry Challenge Award, jointly with Professor William Dichtel of Northwestern University.
The award is considered one of the prominent global recognitions in the fields of green chemistry and sustainability. It is presented in partnership by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to recognize scientific innovations that contribute to developing more sustainable and environmentally safe solutions.
Dr. Alsubaiyi and Professor Dichtel were recognized for their pioneering research in developing innovative technologies for recycling polyurethane, one of the most challenging types of plastics to recycle, using simple, low-cost methods with a reduced environmental impact.
Their research, conducted over several years and including scientific studies and patents, has opened new avenues for recycling polyurethane and converting its materials into valuable products and materials. These advances support the transition toward a more circular and sustainable economy in the plastics industry.
This recognition represents an important milestone in Dr. Alsubaiyi’s scientific career and highlights the outstanding contributions of Syrian academics to research, innovation, and scientific advancement on the global stage.
