Official Statement from the Syrian American Academic Society (SAAS)
The Syrian American Academic Society (SAAS) strongly objects to recent remarks by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claiming that Arabs do not produce science or literature and have not received major international scientific awards.

These statements are false, dismissive, and harmful. They erase the profound contributions of Arab scholars, scientists, physicians, writers, and innovators throughout history and today. They also disregard the accomplishments of Nobel laureates Ahmed Zewail, Omar Yaghi, and Naguib Mahfouz, Fields Medal recipient Michael Atiyah, and countless others whose work has advanced science, medicine, and culture.
Our concern extends beyond factual inaccuracy. No community's dignity, worth, or place in society depends on academic prizes or professional achievements. Every person deserves respect and equal treatment regardless of ethnicity, religion, education, or background.
As Syrian American academics, researchers, healthcare professionals, engineers, entrepreneurs and public servants, we contribute every day to the advancement of knowledge, innovation, education, and public well-being in the United States. These efforts are not an effort to establish our worth or earn anyone’s approval, but rather reflect our enduring commitment to our communities and our shared future. We do so alongside colleagues from every background in service to that shared future.
Remarks that stereotype entire ethnic groups undermine public trust, weaken confidence in institutions, and conflict with the principles of evidence, fairness, and inclusion that should guide public leadership.
SAAS calls on Secretary Kennedy to publicly correct these statements and reaffirm his commitment to evidence-based leadership, nondiscrimination, and respect for all communities.
Scientific integrity demands facts. Public service demands accountability. Human dignity requires neither achievement nor permission.
